For his rise to the position of United Bank for Africa’s Group Managing Director/CEO, reflecting nearly three decades of strategic leadership, continental experience and institutional excellence, and for building a career spanning Africa’s major markets, marked by a continuous drive for innovation, financial inclusion, growth and UBA’s global ambitions, Dr. Oliver Alawuba is Banker of the Year 2026.
Few careers in African banking illustrate the power of institutional knowledge, disciplined ambition and transformational leadership as compellingly as Dr. Oliver Alawuba’s, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the United Bank for Africa (UBA).
A banker of considerable depth and continental experience, Alawuba has spent nearly three decades navigating some of the most complex areas of financial services. His rise from a pioneer staff member at the former Standard Trust Bank in 1997 to the helm of one of Africa’s most expansive financial institutions is a story of professional resilience, strategic foresight and an enduring commitment to excellence.
Today, Alawuba leads an institution with a footprint spanning 20 African countries and beyond the continent. However, his journey to the summit of African banking was neither accidental nor abrupt. It was forged through years of increasingly demanding responsibilities across corporate and institutional banking, consumer banking, public sector banking, retail and commercial banking, project management, corporate governance and enterprise-wide bank management.
Before entering banking, Alawuba had a brief stint in academia. His transition into financial services in 1997 marked the start of an extraordinary professional journey. As a pioneer staff member of the former Standard Trust Bank, he became part of an institution that would play a defining role in the evolution of modern Nigerian banking.
Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, building a reputation for professionalism, strategic execution and results-oriented leadership. His career took him across Nigeria and across the African continent, giving him a rare understanding of the diverse economic environments, regulatory landscapes and customer needs that shape banking across Africa.
Before assuming his current position, Alawuba served in several critical leadership capacities. He was Country CEO in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and subsequently Regional CEO for UBA’s operations in Anglophone Africa. These assignments placed him at the heart of the bank’s continental expansion and equipped him with extensive experience in managing diverse and complex markets.
He later served as Executive Director, East Bank, Nigeria, before rising to Group Deputy Managing Director/CEO, with responsibilities spanning Nigeria and UBA’s subsidiaries across the Rest of Africa.
By the time he assumed the role of Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in August 2022, succeeding Kennedy Uzoka, Alawuba had accumulated decades of banking experience and developed an intimate understanding of the institution he was called upon to lead.
His appointment represented both continuity and renewal. He possessed a deep knowledge of UBA’s culture, history and continental ambitions, while bringing to the role a leadership philosophy shaped by experience across some of Africa’s most important markets.
Alawuba’s leadership is particularly distinguished by its continental breadth. As Group Deputy Managing Director/CEO for UBA Africa, he provided strategic oversight of subsidiaries across 19 African countries, operating in diverse economies, cultures and regulatory systems. The role demanded not only technical banking expertise but also diplomatic acumen, cultural adaptability, and the ability to translate a unified corporate vision into strategies that succeed across diverse environments.
His experience in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, together with his leadership responsibilities across Anglophone Africa, helped shape the pan-African perspective that now informs his stewardship of the UBA Group.
Under his leadership, UBA has continued to drive innovation, enhance the customer experience and deepen its role in advancing financial inclusion. His vision recognises the evolving nature of financial services and the growing importance of technology in expanding access to banking, supporting businesses and connecting African economies.
For Alawuba, banking is not merely about balance sheets and profitability. It is also about building institutions that support economic growth, facilitate enterprise and bring more people into the formal financial system.
His professional accomplishments rest on a strong foundation of education and continuous learning. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Technology from Abia State University, Uturu; a Master of Science degree from the University of Ibadan; and an MBA in Banking and Finance from Olabisi Onabanjo University.
His professional affiliations further demonstrate his commitment to excellence and to institutional leadership. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management and an Honorary Senior Member and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. He is also affiliated with the Nigerian Institute of Directors.
The recognition of Alawuba’s contribution to banking and business reflects the breadth of his professional influence. He has received honorary academic recognition, including an Honorary Doctorate in Banking and Finance from Imo State University. In 2023, the University of Ibadan appointed him an ambassador of the institution during activities commemorating its 75th anniversary, acknowledging his accomplishments and contribution as an alumnus.
In January 2025, the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, conferred on him an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration in recognition of his contributions to business leadership and economic development.
Oliver Alawuba belongs to a generation of African corporate leaders whose careers have unfolded alongside the transformation of the continent’s financial landscape. He has witnessed—and helped to shape—the evolution of Nigerian banking from a predominantly domestic enterprise to an increasingly continental and global business.
His journey from pioneer staff to Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer is a compelling testament to the value of preparation, perseverance and purposeful leadership. At the helm of UBA, he is responsible for one of Africa’s most recognisable banking brands and for millions of customers whose personal and business ambitions are tied to the institution he leads.
For aspiring professionals, his career offers a powerful lesson: enduring leadership is rarely the product of a single moment. It is built gradually through competence, character, continuous learning and the willingness to accept increasingly difficult responsibilities.
