A factional national youth leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Sultan Bello, has resigned his membership of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bello announced his resignation in a letter dated September 24, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of Ja’oji Gyadi Gyadi Arewa Ward in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.
He said the decision followed “extensive consultations, careful consideration, and deep personal reflection,” adding that his resignation took immediate effect.
However, Bello did not expressly state in the letter that his decision was connected to his reported exclusion from the party’s campaign council.
His resignation came amid reports of discontent over the composition of the ADC campaign council, with Bello reportedly omitted from the list despite his previous involvement in the party’s mobilisation activities.
Shortly after submitting the resignation letter, Bello took to X to announce his decision in a brief post.
“I QUIT,” he wrote, adding, “Lean team apparently means lean on the people who worked, then leave them off the list. Anyway, resignation submitted. No hard feelings… just hard lessons.”
The comment appeared to link his resignation to the campaign council controversy, although his formal letter did not identify the alleged exclusion as the reason for his departure.
In the resignation letter, Bello expressed appreciation to his principal, former Rivers State Governor and former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for his support during his time in the ADC.
“I would like to express my profound appreciation to my principal, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, CON, for his guidance, trust, support, and the opportunity to work alongside him,” he said.
“I remain grateful for his confidence in me and wish him continued success in all his future endeavours.”
Bello also thanked the ADC leadership, stakeholders, members and supporters for the opportunity to participate in the party’s activities.
He subsequently requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register with immediate effect.
“I respectfully request that my resignation be accepted and that my name be removed from the membership records of the party with immediate effect,” he stated.
His exit comes as the ADC intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections and opposition politicians mobilise support for the party’s presidential ticket.
Amaechi, whom Bello identified as his principal, is the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
Bello has also been identified with the Atiku-Amaechi political project and previously played a role in youth mobilisation within the party.
His resignation is significant because of his position as the ADC’s National Youth Leader and his involvement in the party’s activities among young supporters.
The development also adds another chapter to Bello’s involvement in the ADC’s internal leadership crisis.
In May 2026, he resigned as Acting National Youth Leader of the ADC faction led by Nafi’u Bala Gombe. At the time, he cited what he described as persistent insults and hostile attacks on social media over his association with the faction.
He later aligned with the faction led by Senator David Mark amid the prolonged dispute over the party’s leadership structure.
Reports at the time indicated that Bello acknowledged his role in the internal crisis and expressed support for efforts to reconcile the rival factions.
His latest resignation, however, is from the Mark-led ADC.
Bello described himself in his latest letter as the party’s National Youth Leader from 2022 to 2026.
Reflecting on his time in the ADC, he said his decision to leave was not taken lightly and that his membership had exposed him to valuable relationships, experiences and lessons.
“This decision has not been taken lightly,” Bello said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served and contributed to the growth and activities of the party during my time as a member.”
