Veteran actor and filmmaker Ramsey Nouah has declared that releasing movies in Nigerian cinemas rarely yields a positive return on investment for film producers.
Speaking during an interview on TVC’s E Splash, the 55-year-old movie star explained that only about 2% of theatrical releases recoup their production budgets and generate a profit. He noted that even after spending heavily on marketing and nationwide promotions, many producers still fail to recoup their investment.
Nouah’s remarks reignite an ongoing debate within Nollywood regarding the commercial viability of cinema runs versus streaming platforms. His stance echoes earlier concerns raised by fellow filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who criticised the exhausting promotional demands of theatrical releases, while box-office record holders like Funke Akindele continue to advocate for aggressive marketing strategies to drive cinema attendance.
