5 Things To Know About Nigeria’s New Digital Home Address System

The federal government has begun the rollout of a new digital home address system across Nigeria from October 1.

But what does the new system mean, and how does it affect you?

Hereunder are five things to know about the new digital home address system

1. Every Building Will Have A Unique Digital Address

Under the new system, buildings across Nigeria will have unique digital addresses in the form of an 11-character digital postcode.

2. How To Find Your Digital Address

Users can download the NIPOST Digital Postcode app, select “Find My Postcode” and allow location access.

They can then identify and select their exact building on the map and copy or save its 11-character digital postcode.

What If Your Building Has No Postcode?

Users can request a postcode through the platform by providing details such as the house number, street, landmark, building type and use.

Photographs may also be required for verification before a postcode is assigned.

3. How Can The Digital Address Be Used?

The postcode can be shared with delivery companies, online retailers, visitors and service providers alongside the conventional address.

Businesses may also use it for location verification, deliveries and field operations.

4. What If You Cannot Find Your Address?

If you cannot find your building or the location appears inaccurate, you can try the following:

  • Check your location: Make sure your phone’s location/GPS is switched on and that the app has permission to access it.
  • Check the map carefully: Make sure you have selected the correct building rather than a neighbouring property.
  • Try again outdoors: If the location is inaccurate, move to an area with a clearer GPS signal and refresh the location.
  • No postcode displayed: Use the platform’s option to request a postcode for the building and provide the required information.
  • Do not guess the postcode: Confirm that the postcode corresponds to your exact building before using it for deliveries or official transactions.

5. You Can Save And Share Your Digital Address

Once assigned, the digital address can be saved and shared whenever a precise building location is required.

It can be used alongside the conventional address to make it easier for delivery companies, online retailers, visitors and service providers to locate a specific building.
