Ahead of the 2027 general election, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress(NDC), Peter Obi declared that nobody has the monopoly of rascality.
Obi urged everyone to come out and participate in the election, insisting that Nigerians want to have a president, governors and other leaders voted by them.
Speaking on Global Digital Town on Sunday, the former Anambra governor warned thugs used for disruption of elections to keep, insisting that they are greater than Nigeria and their number is even few compared to regulated voters.
He encouraged Nigerians, especially the youth to stand firm and protect their votes as well as reject money given to them, saying the target is to instill fear and buy their future.
“In the past, we’ve just talked about the fear of making people feel that sense of fear. That’s what they want to achieve. So they give you money, but if you collect money from them, that is the money that they would have used in security. That is the cause of the security.
“That is the money they would have used for hospitals. That’s why we don’t healthcare. That’s the money they would have used in education. That’s why we are very low in education. So that money you’re collecting, you’re actually giving up your future, a future of a better society by collecting that money. So please don’t collect it.
“The same thing goes with fear. They instill in fear. So you can abandon your future, abandon the future of your children. How many are the Thugs? We have a population of registered voters nearly 100 million. The so-called thugs are not up to one million.
“We will not take it. This time, nobody has monopoly of rascality. I urge everybody to come out. We want to have a president, governors elected by Nigeria this time,”he said.
Obi lamented that at 66, Nigeria
remains underdeveloped with the highest number of poor people living in the nation; “the highest number of out of school children. The list goes on and on. That is what we want to change.”
Assuring the GENZ’s particularly of his commitment to their future, he said:”we urge you to go out there and support what we are doing. It is very important. We need that support. We are committed to it.
“Like I’ve always said, look at the leaders, take their commitment. If you look at our past, you know those who are committed to what they’re saying
Obi said he would be working with other stakeholders to mobilise voters for the election through polling units agents
“We will mobilise them by people who are putting effort and trying to help us mobilise the voters. Because every polling agent is within his own space, within his own polling booth. So to be a polling agent means that you’ve worked hard in that space. Help us to mobilise the voters,” he said.
Calling for more collaboration, Obi said: “all of us are contesting this election. I’m only the forefront figure; the chief servant, or the leader who is standing behind contesting the election. What we want is to have a better society.”
According to him the hardship and insecurity in the country affects everyone, irrespective of tribe or religion.
“To the best of my knowledge, no tribe buys bread cheaper. No tribe buys food cheaper. No religion buys bread cheaper. No religion buys food cheaper.
“The poverty that is in our country today, spread across the whole nation. No tribe is more secure than the other. Insecurity is all over the country,” he said.
Obi added that in the face of this, Nigerians needs a
a president that will unite them and work tirelessly to secure the country.
“We just, look at this latest news a few days ago, where graduates of this country who are just going to serve the nation in our youth service were kidnapped. And we are still campaigning for the next election. It shouldn’t be.
“Where were they kidnapped? Which bush did they take them to? Is it not in Nigeria? Those who are phoning and demanding for one billion, are they phoning from outside Nigeria? No.
‘In today’s technological, with available technology, with available everything, we should be able to find where people who are doing bad things are. And it’s in that bush in Nigeria.
“Some of us should be able to go into that bush until everybody is out. We cannot go to the bush. We have security agencies. They must work. We must make sure we provide them with the logistics for them to work. We must make sure we are with them. We must make sure they are properly taken care of.
“I want the president to lead from the bush. I want the president to be available. That’s why I’ve been saying that four years of being in office, everything I’m doing, holidays, everything must be in Nigeria. I will travel out only for critical meetings that will attract benefits to our country,” he added.
