The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Zamfara State has challenged Governor Dauda Lawal to publish a detailed breakdown of capital projects executed with over N20 billion reportedly invested in each of the state’s 14 local government areas (LGAs).
The state chairman of ADC, Kabiru Garba Gusau, made the call in a statement he issued yesterday, demanding transparency and accountability in public expenditure under the Lawal administration.
Gusau said the call became imperative following the governor’s recent claim that his administration had invested over N20 billion in capital projects in each LGA since assuming office about three years ago.
According to him, if the figure is accurate, it represents a huge public investment that should be properly documented and presented to the Zamfara people for independent verification.
“As citizens of Zamfara State and stakeholders in the political development of our dear State, we believe that government must be accountable to the people. Public resources belong to the people, and citizens have the right to know how such resources are being utilised,” Gusau said.
He challenged the Zamfara State Government to go beyond Gusau, the state capital, and list at least five major capital projects executed in each of the remaining 13 LGAs.
The ADC chairman listed the information the government should provide for each project, including: name and location; purpose and expected benefits; total amount budgeted and actually spent; contractor or implementing agency; commencement date and current status (whether completed, ongoing, or abandoned); and number of beneficiaries.
“These are legitimate questions that should not be viewed as political attacks. They are questions of public accountability, transparency and responsible governance,” he added.
Gusau noted that while Gusau LGA has received visible development attention, citizens in the other 13 LGAs also deserve equal attention and development.
He urged the administration to present a comprehensive three-year scorecard showing major roads constructed or rehabilitated, schools constructed or renovated, healthcare facilities provided or upgraded, water projects, agricultural projects, youth employment and empowerment programmes, women-focused economic empowerment programmes, rural electrification, markets and other economic infrastructure, and security-related interventions in each LGA.
“The people deserve facts, not general claims. If more than N20 billion has truly been invested in capital projects in each Local Government Area, then the evidence should be available and easily presented,” the statement said.
The party called on Governor Lawal to publish a comprehensive 14-LGA Capital Projects and Expenditure Scorecard covering his tenure, with clear details on projects, costs, contractors, funding sources, implementation status and beneficiaries.
“Zamfara belongs to all of us. The people deserve to know what is being done with their resources, where it is being done, how much is being spent, and what impact those investments are having on their lives,” Gusau said.
He said the ADC would continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, equitable development and responsible governance in Zamfara State.
