‎Ondo To Deploy N900m Electric Buses, Charging Stations To Cut Transport Costs

The Ondo State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an information technology firm, ADMINSERV, for the deployment of five electric buses valued at N900 million and the installation of charging stations to reduce transportation costs.

The project will begin with five electric buses costing N180 million each, while charging stations will be installed at selected bus stops in Akure, with plans to extend the facilities to other local government areas of the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, disclosed this at the MoU signing ceremony, saying the initiative would provide an alternative to petrol-powered transportation and make electric mobility more accessible.

He said the charging stations would serve both the project’s buses and other owners of electric vehicles.

“This is the first thing that is happening in Ondo State. They want to use those bus stops as charging points for electric vehicles. This would reduce the cost of transportation drastically,” Ogunyemi said.

He added that the state government was pursuing electric mobility alongside compressed natural gas (CNG) as part of efforts to address rising transportation costs.

According to him, the government is developing CNG infrastructure at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and in Ore to improve access to alternative energy sources across the state’s three senatorial districts.

Ogunyemi said the initiative followed discussions involving transport commissioners, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Implementation Committee on CNG and electric vehicles on alternative energy solutions for the transport sector.

The Managing Director of ADMINSERV, Peter Nnamani, said the company, established in 2025, was developing technology-driven transportation solutions, including an artificial intelligence-enabled application to improve mobility in Ondo State.

He said the proposed system would address high transportation costs, delays, environmental pollution and security concerns through the deployment of electric buses and digital monitoring.

Nnamani estimated that monthly transportation expenses could drop from about N9,000 to between N5,000 and N6,000 per user under the proposed arrangement.

He added that the application would enable the monitoring of buses and drivers, while the project would create employment opportunities through the management of charging stations and the recruitment of bus drivers.

According to him, the buses would operate on scheduled routes to reduce waiting times and improve punctuality.

Nnamani described the Ondo initiative as ADMINSERV’s first project in Nigeria.
