The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by some members of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to destabilise its structure and weaken the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Politics Nigeria reports that the party claimed that the alleged plot involved former members and strategically positioned officials working to create internal divisions, undermine its electoral chances and erode its grassroots support.
In a statement released on Thursday by its National Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the PRP alleged that some senior members of the ruling party were being approached to provide hundreds of millions of naira to finance the operation.
Baba-Ahmed said the party had been monitoring what it described as efforts to damage its political standing and frustrate its participation in building a credible opposition coalition.
“The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has been following attempts to subvert it and cause irreparable damage to its electoral fortunes and its place in the popular attempt to build a credible opposition coalition,” the statement said.
The opposition party alleged that individuals previously associated with the party were being used alongside serving officials to create the impression of a leadership crisis and weaken its organisational structure.
“It is now clear that attempts are being made to use some subversive and disgraced former members of the Party to create impressions of division in the party, as well as use strategically-placed officers of the Party to weaken it and sabotage its grassroots support,” it added.
According to the party, the alleged operation was linked to senior figures in the ruling party who were reportedly being persuaded to provide substantial financial backing.
“These efforts are being linked with senior members of the ruling party who are being persuaded to fund this scheme with hundreds of millions of Naira,” the statement said.
The opposition party urged its members and the public to remain vigilant and reject any attempt to undermine its internal cohesion or influence its political decisions through financial inducements.
It specifically cautioned against the recruitment of polling agents by individuals who lacked the authority to represent the party, warning that such activities could be part of the alleged effort to weaken its electoral structure.
“In particular, attempts to recruit polling agents for the Party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted,” the statement added.
The PRP also alleged that some party officials might offer substantial sums of money to persuade members to support opposition candidates who had not been officially endorsed by the party.
“Huge amounts of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed,” it said.
The party further warned members of the ruling party against participating in what it described as an attempt to create a fictional PRP using the ruling party’s funds and the identities of those allegedly involved.
It also threatened disciplinary action against any serving PRP official found to be involved in the alleged scheme.
Meanwhile, the party leadership assured its candidates and supporters that it remained committed to their political aspirations and the broader effort to build a united opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PRP maintained that it would not allow its members’ loyalty to be compromised and vowed to oppose the continuation of the current administration beyond 2027.
