Nursing Council Inducts 111 Varsity Graduates, Stresses Patient Care

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has inducted 111 pioneer nursing graduates of Maryam Abacha University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, into the nursing profession.

The maiden induction and oath-taking was held on Tuesday, at the Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Twin Theatre.
After administering the oath, the registrar of the council, Dr Alhassan Ndagi, congratulated the inductees on their achievement and urged them to uphold the dignity of the profession by prioritising the well-being of every patient under their care.

He charged the new nurses to remain committed to the profession, pursue further education, participate in professional development programmes, and embrace technological advancements in modern healthcare.
Ndagi also urged them to maintain the highest ethical standards in their practice and exercise caution in their use of social media.

He explained that the inductees had been certified by the Council to practise nursing, subject to completing a mandatory one-year internship at an accredited health facility in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Founder of the MAAUN Group of Universities, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, congratulated the graduates on the milestone and urged them to be good ambassadors of the university wherever they might find themselves.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to producing professionals capable of competing favourably with their counterparts across the world.

Also speaking, the President of MAAUN, Prof. Mohammad Israr, described nursing as one of the noblest and most respected professions, built on compassion, dedication, sacrifice, and a commitment to saving lives and serving humanity.

“Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, providing care, comfort, and hope to patients and their families,” Israr said.

Earlier, the Dean of the School of Nursing, Dr. Umar Lawal Bello, said the induction and oath-taking ceremony marked a new chapter in the lives of the graduates.

He appreciated the university’s founder and other members of the management for their support in ensuring the success of the nursing programme.

The induction lecture, titled “Improving the Image of the Nursing Profession Through Sustaining Its Core Values,” was delivered by Prof. S. N. Garba of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Bayero University, Kano.

Garba highlighted five core values of nursing reinforced through ethical training: altruism; professionalism and clinical autonomy; human dignity and patient advocacy; integrity and good moral standards; and leadership and collaboration.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards to outstanding students in recognition of their academic performance, as well as to individuals who contributed to the graduates’ success.

The maiden induction ceremony was attended by members of the university’s management, invited guests, parents, and nursing professionals from across the country.
