Nigeria, WFP Deepen Partnership On Food Security, Humanitarian Response

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP) to tackle food insecurity, improve humanitarian response and promote sustainable development across the country.

The development was disclosed in a statement posted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official Facebook page on Thursday.

The statement, which was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, followed a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the WFP Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms Katrien Ghoos.

According to the statement, Odumegwu-Ojukwu received Ghoos in audience on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, when the WFP official presented her Letter of Commission to the minister.

It noted that the meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to review the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the World Food Programme, particularly in the areas of food security, humanitarian assistance, nutrition, resilience-building and sustainable development.

The minister commended the World Food Programme for what she described as its continued support to Nigeria, especially in providing life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian challenges.

She acknowledged the critical role the organisation has played in complementing the Federal Government’s efforts to improve food security, strengthen community resilience, and promote sustainable livelihoods.

According to the statement, Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working closely with the World Food Programme and other international partners to address the root causes of food insecurity through coordinated humanitarian and development interventions.

She stressed that Nigeria remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships that advance national development priorities while ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the support they need.

The minister also underscored the importance of integrating humanitarian assistance with long-term development strategies.

She said such strategies should aim to “enhance agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods, promote economic inclusion, and strengthen resilience against climate-related and other emerging challenges.”

Speaking during the meeting, Ghoos reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts towards achieving food security and sustainable development.

She reiterated the World Food Programme’s readiness to continue collaborating with the Nigerian government to advance initiatives that strengthen food systems, improve the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, and support the country’s broader development goals.
