Zaynab Alkali: The Woman Who Gave Northern Nigerian Women A Literary Voice

Zaynab Alkali is a Nigerian novelist, short-story writer, poet and academic, widely recognised as the **first female novelist from Northern Nigeria. Born in 1950, she attended Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Ilorin before pursuing university education. She studied English and later earned a doctorate in African Literature from Bayero University, Kano.

Alkali built a long career in academia, teaching English, African Literature and Creative Writing. She spent more than two decades at the University of Maiduguri and later joined Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where she became a professor and held senior administrative positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Her breakthrough novel, The Stillborn, was published in 1984 and won the Association of Nigerian Authors’ prose prize in 1985. The novel examines women’s aspirations, marriage, education and the tensions between tradition and modern life.

Her other published works include The Virtuous Woman, Cobwebs & Other Stories, The Descendants, The Initiates and Invisible Borders.

Through decades of writing and teaching, Alkali has established an important place in Nigerian literature, particularly in expanding the representation of Northern Nigerian women and their experiences.
