The 2026 Ikogosi Road Race is set to return on October 31, with organisers targeting a stronger economic and tourism impact for Ekiti State through a blend of athletics, youth engagement and destination promotion.
The 17.5km race, which will run from Ilawe to the renowned Ikogosi Warm Spring, has received the backing of Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji as part of efforts to promote initiatives that empower young people and stimulate grassroots economic activity.
Beyond the competition itself, the race is expected to attract athletes, officials, tourists and spectators to the state, creating business opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders, artisans and other small and medium-sized enterprises.
Organisers said the 2026 edition will build on the success of last year’s race, which received international recognition for its organisation, athlete welfare and prompt payment of prize money.
They are targeting an improved event that meets international standards while providing a platform for the discovery and development of emerging athletic talent.
Ekiti athletes have an additional incentive to compete: a special reward for the first indigene to cross the finish line, provided they finish among the top 10 overall.
The initiative is designed to encourage local athletes to compete against some of the best runners while gaining valuable exposure and experience.
