Google has announced a one-year free subscription to its Google AI Plus service for students in Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, in a move aimed at widening access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools and strengthening digital skills among young Nigerians.
The subscription, valued at N92,400 per student, is available to students aged 18 and above who are currently enrolled in accredited higher institutions across the country.
The initiative, which comes as the new academic year approaches, will give eligible students access to a range of AI-powered learning, research and productivity tools through Google’s Gemini platform.
According to Google, the package includes increased usage limits, Gemini Omni, Gemini Live for real-time voice conversations, Deep Research for academic projects and term papers, custom practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage.
Nigeria is among 27 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where the student offer is available.
Director, West and East Africa at Google, Olumide Balogun, said the initiative was designed to reduce financial barriers that could prevent young Nigerians from accessing advanced AI tools.
“AI is the defining technological shift of our generation, and for Nigeria, with one of the youngest and most entrepreneurial populations in the world, it is an immediate leapfrog opportunity,” Balogun said.
He added that providing free access to Google AI Plus for a second consecutive year would enable Nigerian students to engage with complex subjects, build digital capabilities and improve their competitiveness in the global economy.
The development comes as AI increasingly becomes part of education, research and professional development, while concerns persist over the affordability of advanced digital tools for students in developing economies.
Google said the initiative was not intended to encourage students to rely on AI to complete assignments without understanding the underlying subjects.
To address this concern, the company said Gemini’s Guided Learning mode was designed to function more like a tutor by providing hints, asking guiding questions and helping students work through problems instead of simply producing answers.
Google said the approach was evaluated in a Google DeepMind study involving 1,763 students in West African schools.
According to the company, students who used Guided Learning recorded learning progress equivalent to between 1.2 and 1.7 years over eight weeks. More than 90 per cent of interactions in the study focused on understanding concepts, while Gemini provided a direct solution in only two per cent of interactions.
The company also said educators could maintain control over students’ use of AI tools through Google Classroom by locking Gemini into Guided Learning mode.
Google said student and classroom data would not be used to train its AI models.
The subscription provides students with tools such as Gemini Study Notebooks, which can use uploaded lecture notes and course materials to generate practice quizzes and lesson plans.
Students can also use Gemini Live and Deep Research for brainstorming and research, while interactive three-dimensional visualisations can assist with understanding complex structures.
Another feature, Google Lens Homework Helper, allows students to photograph difficult equations or diagrams and receive guided assistance in understanding them.
Google said the combination of the tools was intended to provide personalised learning support while helping students develop research, digital and problem-solving skills.
Eligible students are required to verify their enrolment through SheerID before activating the offer, while students who benefited from the programme during the previous academic year can also renew their subscription for another 12 months after re-verifying their student status.
The initiative comes against the backdrop of growing efforts by governments, technology companies and educational institutions to equip Nigerian youths with AI and other emerging technology skills.
