Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure significantly more support in the South-East during the 2027 presidential election.
Umahi said the All Progressives Congress (APC) would improve substantially on its performance in the region during the 2023 presidential election, predicting that Tinubu could win all five South-East states.
The minister stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he discussed the APC’s prospects in the region and its chances of securing more votes in 2027.
According to Umahi, Tinubu’s support in the South-East would be significantly higher than what the APC recorded in the 2023 election.
“I will not tell you whether we win the five votes of the South-East or not, but the President is going to harvest a lot of votes in the South-East. It can never be the same as it was before,” he said.
Asked how many of the five South-East states he expected the APC to win in the 2027 presidential election, Umahi expressed optimism that the party could take all of them.
“My faith is telling me we’ll win the five states,” he said.
The former Ebonyi State governor also dismissed suggestions that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), poses a major threat to Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Umahi argued that Obi was not the only presidential candidate from the South-East expected to contest the 2027 election, noting that other candidates from the region were also in the race.
“By the way, it is not only Peter Obi from the South-East who is contesting. We have about three or four other presidential candidates running.
“We have the Labour Party, and I think there are two other parties, even a woman is involved. So, Peter Obi is not a threat as far as I am concerned,” Umahi said.
