2027: Zamfara ADC Demands Review Of Political Campaign Permit Fees

The Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the state government to review what it described as exorbitant permit fees for political campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The state chairman of the party, Kabiru Garba, made the call in a statement issued in Gusau on Saturday.

Garba said the party was concerned about the campaign permit fees contained in a September 25 letter issued by the Zamfara Urban and Regional Planning Board (ZUREPB).

He acknowledged the government’s responsibility to regulate the use of public spaces, protect infrastructure, manage traffic and ensure that political activities are conducted peacefully and orderly.

However, he said the fees could create an unnecessary financial burden and restrict lawful political participation.

The ADC chairman urged the government to urgently review the charges and consult political parties and other stakeholders to ensure transparency, fairness and affordability.

He also cited the electoral framework issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which provides guidelines on political party activities and campaigns.

Garba said while regulations covering rallies, processions, road shows, posters, billboards and the use of public spaces were necessary, such measures must be lawful, proportionate and applied equally to all political parties and candidates.

“We, therefore, call on the authorities concerned to review the fees with a view to establishing reasonable, proportionate and affordable charges where legitimate regulation is required,” he said.
